The expected lifespan of turf can vary depending on various factors such as the type of grass used, local climate, maintenance practices, and usage. On average, well-maintained turf can last over 20 years. However, some high-quality turf blends, such as the ones we use, may have a longer lifespan.

Regular maintenance, such as proper watering, fertilising, mowing, and pest control, can help extend the lifespan of your turf further.

Our turf is available in different sizes, usually in convenient strips that are 1 metre wide. The length of the strips depends on the amount you order, so you can choose the perfect size for your needs. Our minimum order size is 10m², we can accommodate orders up to 375 square metres.

Turf can have several positive impacts on the environment when properly managed. Using our Top Turf you can help with:

  1. Carbon Reduction – Turfgrass, like other plants, absorbs and stores carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through a process called photosynthesis. This can help mitigate climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and acting as a natural carbon sink.
  2. Soil Erosion Control – Healthy turf with a dense root system can help stabilise soil and prevent erosion. The extensive root network of turfgrass holds soil particles together and reduces the risk of soil runoff during heavy rainfall, which can help protect water quality and prevent sedimentation in nearby water bodies.
  3. Stormwater Safeguarding – Turf can act as a natural filter for stormwater runoff, helping to remove pollutants and recharge groundwater. The grass blades and root system can trap and filter sediments, nutrients, and other pollutants from stormwater, reducing the impact of runoff on local water systems.
  4. Improving Biodiversity – Well-maintained turf can provide habitat for various wildlife species, such as insects, birds, and small mammals. This can contribute to biodiversity and support local ecosystems, providing important ecological benefits.
  5. Cooling – Turfgrass has a cooling effect on the surrounding environment, reducing the urban heat island effect. The shade and evapotranspiration from turfgrass can help lower ambient temperatures, making it more comfortable for people and reducing energy needs for cooling.

It’s generally recommended to avoid walking on new turf until it has rooted firmly into the soil, which can take anywhere from 2-4 weeks depending on the weather and soil conditions.

Walking on new turf before it has rooted can damage the delicate grass blades and roots, which can hinder the growth and development of the turf.

However, if you need to water your new turf and it’s not possible to reach all areas without walking on it, you can take some precautions to minimise damage.

For example, you can use a lightweight garden hose or a watering can with a long spout to water the turf, and step carefully on the edges or corners of the turf to avoid stepping directly on the grass blades.

The amount of topsoil needed for turf depends on the depth of the soil layer, which should be between 4-6 inches for the best growth.

To calculate the amount of topsoil needed, multiply the length and width of the area where the turf will be laid, then multiply that number by your chosen depth of the topsoil layer in inches.

For example, if the area is 10 feet by 10 feet (100 square feet) and you want a 4-inch topsoil layer, you’ll need 33.33 cubic feet (100 x 4/12) of topsoil.

Getting rid of weeds before laying turf is an important step to ensure healthy and even growth of the new lawn.

We recommend using these methods:

  1. Hand weeding: This involves manually pulling out weeds by hand, which is best suited for small areas. Be sure to remove the entire root system of the weed to prevent it from growing back.

  2. Herbicides: There are a variety of herbicides available that are designed to kill weeds. Be sure to choose a product that’s safe to use on the type of soil and turf you’ll be laying.  Apply the herbicide a few weeks before laying the turf to ensure that the weeds have been completely eradicated.

  3. Solarisation: This involves covering the area with a clear plastic sheet and leaving it in place for several weeks to kill the weeds with heat. This method is most effective during hot weather.

  4. Tilling: This involves using a tiller to break up the soil and remove weeds. This method is most effective for large areas but can also damage the soil structure and result in uneven turf growth.

In general, it’s recommended to wait at least 2-3 weeks before mowing new turf, or until the grass blades have reached a height of about 3-4 inches.

Set the mower blades to a high setting to avoid cutting the grass blades too short, which can stress the grass and make it more susceptible to disease and pests. Gradually lower the mower blades over time as the turf becomes more established.

Turf requires a certain amount of sunlight to thrive and maintain healthy growth. If turf doesn’t receive enough sunlight, it can result in a number of problems, including:

  1. Poor growth: Without enough sunlight, turf may grow slowly or not at all, resulting in sparse or patchy areas of the lawn.

  2. Thinning: If it doesn’t receive enough sunlight may thin out over time, leaving bare patches that are more susceptible to weed growth.

  3. Disease susceptibility: Turf that is weakened by lack of sunlight is more vulnerable to diseases, such as brown patch and dollar spot.

  4. Poor colour: Turf that doesn’t receive enough sunlight may lose its vibrant green colour and become yellow or brown.

  5. Shallow root growth: With not enough sunlight, it may develop shallow root systems, which can make it more susceptible to drought and other environmental stresses.

The best time to lay turf is during the cooler months of the year, when the weather is mild and there is plenty of moisture in the soil. This allows the turf to establish its root system without the stress of high temperatures and drought.

For warm-season grasses, the best time to lay turf is during late spring or early summer, when the soil temperature has reached about 15.5°C and the grass is actively growing.

For cool-season grasses, the best time to lay turf is during early fall or late spring, when the weather is cooler and there is plenty of rainfall.

It’s also important to choose a day to lay turf when the weather is mild and there is no rain or strong winds forecasted.

Preparing the soil properly before laying turf is crucial for ensuring healthy and even growth of the new lawn. Here are the steps to prepare the soil for turf:

  1. Remove any existing grass, weeds, and debris from the area where the turf will be laid. Use a rake or hoe to loosen the soil and remove any rocks, roots, or other obstacles.

  2. Test the soil to determine its pH level and nutrient content. Adjust the pH level as needed by adding lime to raise the pH or sulfur to lower the pH. Add fertilisers or organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted manure, to improve the soil’s nutrient content.

  3. Till the soil to a depth of 4-6 inches to loosen compacted soil and improve drainage. Be sure to remove any rocks or large clumps of soil to create a smooth surface.

  4. Level the soil by using a rake or lawn roller to create a smooth and even surface. Be sure to create a slight slope away from buildings and other structures to ensure proper drainage.

  5. Add a layer of topsoil to the prepared soil if needed. The layer should be about 2-3 inches deep and should be high-quality, weed-free soil.

  6. Use a lawn roller to compact the soil lightly to create a firm and level surface for the turf to be laid on.

After laying new turf, it’s important to allow time for the grass roots to establish themselves before walking on it to prevent damage to the turf. In general, it’s best to avoid walking on new turf for the first 2-3 weeks after it has been laid.

If you need to walk on the new turf during this time, be sure to do so with caution and avoid putting too much weight on any one area. Walking on new turf too soon or too frequently can damage the roots and cause the grass to become dislodged, resulting in patchy or uneven growth.

After 2-3 weeks, you can begin to walk on the new turf more regularly, but it’s still important to be careful not to damage the grass blades or roots. Gradually increase foot traffic on the turf over the following weeks to allow it to become fully established before resuming normal use.

Proper care and maintenance are essential for the success of new turf. Here are some tips on how to look after new turf:

  1. Watering: Water the new turf thoroughly immediately after laying it to ensure that it’s well-hydrated. After that, water the turf deeply but infrequently to encourage deep root growth. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to waterlogged soil and disease.

  2. Fertilising: Fertilise the new turf about 4-6 weeks after it has been laid to encourage healthy growth. Use a fertiliser that’s appropriate for your type of grass, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application.

  3. Mowing: Wait at least 2-3 weeks after laying new turf before mowing it for the first time. Once the turf has become established, mow it regularly but avoid cutting more than one-third of the grass blade length at a time.

  4. Weeding: Keep the area around the new turf free of weeds to prevent competition for nutrients and water. Hand pull any weeds as they appear or use an appropriate weed control product.

  5. Aeration: Aerate the new turf about 6-12 months after it has been laid to improve soil compaction and allow air and water to penetrate the soil more easily.

  6. Pest and disease management: Keep an eye out for common pests and diseases that can affect your turf, such as grubs, chinch bugs, webworms, mole crickets, and brown patch. Identify the problem early and take appropriate measures to prevent further damage.
